Natural quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock, which was originally pure quartz and sandstone.  Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression.  The color variation depends on several factors such as the amount of iron oxide present, the region the stone comes from and the age of the stone.
